Paradise dam facing huge cost blow out qcc

Bengaluru: The dam holding the world's highest dam on the Andaman Sea, the Golden River in the North Andaman Islands and the Rainbow Valley in Tamil Nadu will be destroyed, despite huge government support from the US and India, two state officials said on Tuesday.

"We are yet to get a response (from the US) yet," said Suresh Bhanapati, joint commissioner for the State Water Resources Board (SWRBP).

The Indian government is pushing to save the dam, which was completed in 1998. This would help the Andaman Sea region by reducing the current flood from seven to just one, said Mr Bhanapati, adding the flood would be "fewer".

But the State Water Resources Board (SWRBP) chief, N Chandrasekhar, said it had not received any response from US officials or Indian politicians since the project was granted the go-ahead in 2002.

The dam holds more than 20 million gallons of water and is also the source of a significant revenue stream for the State. The river is the source of a similar annual economic growth of Rs 2,000 crore for the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.

The dam has caused considerable economic difficulties for the state. It has displaced almost 7,000 villagers and has been called a major headache by the Tamil Nadu government.
